Under 16s Match Reports, 2004-5
Stanley Rangers Under 16s won the Final of the
Under 16s Yorkshire Youth Cup 6-4 against rivals Smawthorne, played
at the Boulevard in Hull. The game was played in sunny but cold
conditions with both sides confident of a win.
After an even opening, Stanley started to get
on top and threaten the Panthers line. Stanley registered the crucial
score midway through the first half when Damien Thomas crossed and
Keiron Hyde added the goal. Rangers could have gone further ahead
but failed to take their chances and also had a couple of tries
disallowed as they went into the break with a narrow lead.
The second half was just as intense with Stanley
being denied some last minute chances by Smawthorne's defence. Smawthorne
had to settle for a consolation try in the corner a minute from
time from second row Andrew Matthew but crucially were unable to
kick the conversion. Stanley held on for a famous and deserved victory.
