New look Stanley Rangers, show plenty of new season promise as they go down 38-10 on the road at Bradford Dudley Hill.
A number of injuries and un availabilities restricted head coach Gary Lord's selection capabilities ahead of opening day defeat. However, Lord's young chargers showed promise early in the game with some huge tackling in the middle of the field. Walton, Brown and Grice laid a good early platform for the Rangers, who were unlucky not to score as a free flowing move to the left hand side came to no avail.
A tough and promising opening quarter was undone by a string of handling errors, and penalties gave heavy territory and possession to the home side. In spite of impressive defence inside their own 20 from Chris Grice, Ackroyd and Ledger the dam finally burst with Dudley Hill scoring a neat try in the right hand corner. This was swiftly followed by 3 further scores as the tiring Rangers defence was forced to work overtime, leaving the score line 18-0. Stanley finally hit back towards the end of the first half as a free flowing move involving Ackroyd and Danny Grice found the impressive Ledger in space on the right edge. The quick thinking centre chipped back in field to allow the on rushing Marsh to touchdown giving the score of 18-4 at the break.
Rejuvenated by Lord's half time team talk Stanley fired into the much larger Dudley Hill pack with renewed vigour. Young Rob Hartley and Connor Morgan were defying their tender years with big hits on the on coming home team forwards. Once again a strong 20 minute period led to a stalemate for both teams in a competitive arm wrestle with Cattley and ubiquitous backrow Chris Grice leading from the front. Stanley finally conceded their first try after the sin binning of Hartley for a huge shoulder tackle, putting the Rangers under pressure mid way through the half. The introduction of veteran prop Gareth Rawlinson almost enabled Stanley to hit back immediately after a nice hit up and looping offload released Danny Grice who fed centre Bell and winger Cooper, who was unfortunately bundled into touch. A further Dudley hill score extended the deficit to 28-4 before Stanley handed themselves a life line, despite once again being down to 12 men, with Ledger being sent to the bin after a team warning. Danny Grice's quick thinking and high quality cross field kick found speedster John Nunns in space to calmly collect and cross the whitewash in the corner.
Stanley threatened for a quick back to back try when nice handling from Chris Grice and James Fox allowed Danny Grice to put Jamie Bell through a hole but was unable to touchdown in the corner. This was the last attacking opportunity created by Stanley who's tired defence finally ran out of steam late on conceding 2 further try's leaving the final score at 38-10.
The togetherness, team spirit and attitude shown by the Rangers will have given the whole squad heart for the upcoming season and with a number of players due to return from injury there is an air of excitement for the home opener this Saturday against Askam.
