Stanley Rangers 54 v Stanningley Crown 28
Senior Cup
30.10.04

Stanley Rangers made easy progress into the Fred Marshall Senior Cup running out winners 54-28 against Stanningley Crown.

In a tough encounter, the visitors took the lead in the opening minutes with a converted try. However, Stanley immediately responded when Gareth Dobson superby fed Stuart Godfrey to go over for a try, with Gareth Whitehead adding the goal. This was followed by a try from Andy Hall in the corner, converted by Whitehead. Excellent approach play saw James Howcroft brilliantly offload to David Baxby for the third try, again converted by Whitehead. Further tries from Chris Woolford, converted by Whitehead; a brilliant solo effort from David Baxby who collected the ball deep in his own half and outpaced the defence to score under the sticks and a Jon Cooper try both converted by Whitehead saw Stanley building up a solid lead. Stanningley were still producing flowing rugby and crossed again just before the break.

The visitors came out strongly after the break but the Stanley defence held and Cooper went over soon after, with Whitehead making a successful conversion. There was a further try from Stanningley, but tries from Simon Carr and Whitehead who kicked both for a 100% record, sealed the victory.

Man of the Match went to Gareth Dobson.

Stanley travel to Ackworth in the Wakefield and District Cup next Saturday, 6th November.
