Saturday 9th October saw us travel to top of the league Guiseley Rangers.
Stanley
started off strong, but were soon under pressure from
a team that hadn't lost a game all season playing on a pitch
that resembled Mount Everest rather than a rugby league
pitch, but Rangers held strong, with brilliant defence to
keep Guiseley out for three repeat sets and over 15 minutes
before Guiseley broke through scoring in the corner. 4
points. Guiseley continued their barrage but with rangers
Pilling on the pressure Guiseley started to falter with a
few knock ons, loose carries and forward passes Stanley gained
an advantage. Some good runs from Keaney, Fletcher, Buckley and
Morley but after Rangers made a few mistakes, Guiseley were
soon back on the attack and it wasn't long before they were on
the score sheet again - 8 points. Rangers continued their
uphill struggle and came close with runs from Kirk Leese and
Talbot, some good runs from both centres and wingers.
Guiseley continued their pressure and it wasn't long before
they scored again 6 more points and half time 14 points up.
All was not lost and Rangers now had the
advantage of playing down the hill, but Guiseley were not going to
lie down and being at home knew just how to capitalise. It
wasn't long before they had accumulated another 3 tries and two
conversions to add another 16 points. Rangers continued to
battle it out with some immense tackling from Kirk,
Keaney, Fletcher and Jatta, Rangers held strong until they
got pinned on their own line. We defended strong until
Guiseley sneaked in at the corner on the fifth - another 6
points but Rangers didn't falter and continued with the
pressure causing Guiseley to make some mistakes and finally
regaining the ball. Some more good runs from Wain, Jatta and
some brilliant tackling from Speight and we were on their
line. Some quick thinking and getting the ball out and
keeping low and Kirk was over in the corner - a consolation 4
points but well deserved.
