Leigh Miners Rangers - two divisions above Stanley - proved too strong for the hosts and won 40-12 in this preliminary round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.
Stanley took the lead after a good opening spell of pressure with a Joe McDermott try in the corner. Whitehead missed the conversion but added a penalty soon afterwards. However, Leigh equalled with a try from Leon Brennan, goaled by Andrew Sarsfield. In a strong second quarter, Leigh took the lead with a try from Gorton under the posts and then a Balmer try from close range. Two minutes before the break Miners scored the try of the game with a solo try from Sarsfield. A try on half time from Humphrey, converted by Sarsfield put Miners 30-6n ahead at the break.
