A hat-trick of tries from Stanley's Matty Firth kept Stanley's promotion hopes alive with a closely-fought win over Waterhead 28-24.
A 10th minute try from hooker Andy Cheetham and Fitzgerald's conversion gave Waterhead an early 6 point lead. Further points from Williamson and Diveny with two converted tries increased the home side's lead. However a try from Stanley's Matty Firth, converted by Danny Duce cut the lead to 18-6 at half time.
In the second half it wasn't until the 51st minute that Richard Cattley claimed a try, converted by Duce reducing the gap to 18-12. Waterhead's Fitzgerald added a try and the extras but then Firth raced in from 20 metres for his second try, again converted by Duce. Then Mark Robinson crossed the line five minutes later and Duce again added the conversion.
The score was locked at 24-24 but then scrum-half Firth scored the winning try to give Stanley two valuable points.
