In a close first half at 14-10 there was little to chose between the two sides but in the end it was the visitors who came away with the two points.

Rangers opened the scoring after six minutes with a try from Chris Molyneux. Four minutes later, Waterhead replied with a try and conversion from Waterhead's Terry Fitzgerald which he repeated three minutes later to take the score to 12-4 to Waterhead. Rangers hit back with a Gareth Whitehead try and conversion but a penalty from Fitzgerald was enough for Waterhead to go in at the interval 14-10 ahead.

In the second half, Waterhead increased their lead at the 57th minute when Fitzgerald went over for his hat-trick and added the conversion, along with a drop goal. A Howcroft try from Rangers kept them in touch but further Waterhead tries from Bennett and Williamson along with two more goals from Fitzgerald took the visitors to 33 points. A late try from Stanley's Findlay took their score to 18 points but it was the visitors who finished the stronger.
