Rangers and Dudley Hill went point for point in this closely-fought National Cup game before the visitors took the match with a "golden point" after extra time.
Dudley Hill took the lead with a Lewis Evans try on 15 minutes which was converted by stand-off Tony Williams. Rangers replied three minutes later with a Danny Grice try converted by Gareth Whitehead. A further try by David Brown, again converted by Whitehead, gave Rangers the lead 12-6 at half time.
A Whitehead drop goal eight minutes into the second half made it 13-6 before Dudley Hill hit back with a try from winger Dwaine Nelson, converted by Williams. Essex added the drop goal to make it 13-13 at full time.
In extra time, Rangers retook the lead through a Matty Firth try, converted by Whitehead. Then Danny Thomas crossed the line for Dudley Hill to level the score. With the score at 19-19 after extra time, the match had to be decided by a "golden point". It was Dudley Hill who scored first with a Thomas try to win the game.
