Millom 14 v Stanley Rangers 8
05.03.11
In a tense and hard-fought struggle it was relegation-threatened Millom who came out on top 14-8 against promotion-hopeful Stanley Rangers.
It was Stanley who opened the scoring int he fifth minute when a lost ball was snapped up by winger Scott Childs to score in the corner. But Millom responded within three minutes as their winger Connor Mitchell went in for an ungoaled try to level the score. Unfortunately he was injured in the process and had to leave the field. Matty Firth, Richard Cattley and Kevin King were in terrific form and both sides forwards took the play up the field. On the 20th minute, Millom got the breakthrough when hooker O'Brien shot in for a goal converted by Palmer to give a half time lead of 10-4.
At the start of the second half, Stanley opened strongly and on the 46th minute Richard Cattleyt went in for an ungoaled try to reduce the gap to two points. Both sides were desperate for a win, Millom to edge away from relegation and Stanley to keep in touch with promotion rivals Oulton. Millom had Sibley and Woodburn tackled over the Stanley line unable to ground the ball and at the other end, Rangers' Firth and Craig Rhodes were also denied.
It was Millom who got the final vital breakthrough with four minutes when a spilled ball was snapped up by prop Carter who raced 45 metres to put winger Barshaw in for the clinching try.
