Eastmoor Dragons 18 v Stanley Rangers 34
01.10.11
Stanley Ranger's first win of the season, 34-18, also put a dent in Eastmoor's table-topping ambitions. Halfback Danny Sampson was a thorn in the side of the Dragon's defence whilst four tries from Scott Childs added to Stanley's deserved win.
Stanley began brightly and in the sixth minute Childs sprinted 40 metres to put Sampson in for an early try. The home side responded with a flurry of attacks culminating in a Richard Colley try in the 28th minute, goaled by Adrian Mulcahy. Stanley however replied with good work from Sampson which put Childs away for a touchdown which Danny Grice could not conver. Stanley went into the interval leading 8-6.
Within two minutes of the restart a Grice chip was scooped up by Childs who crossed the line, the try being converted by Grice. Eastmoor replied with a Talbot try, goaled by Mulcahy and the score stayed the same until the 58th minute, James Howcroft and Richard Cattley leading the rearguard action against an Eastmoor side in which McVittie, Colley and Mulcahy were outstanding. Two penalties took Stanley downfield and Sampson found Childs again for the winger's hat trick try, then Rangers produced a replica of the previous try, as Childs claimed his fourth of the game.
Dragons' hit back with a try from Colley, goaled by Mulcahy, reducing the gap to four points. With four minutes to go, Ross McGretton scored wide out for Rangers and Abson converted to settle the issue. Abson added a later penalty and on full time Cattley powered over for Stanley's seventh try to get Stanley off the mark at last.
