The presentations of this year’s RFL Volunteer Awards took place during the half time break of the Super league clash between Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Wildcats on Sunday 18th July. The Wakefield service area and the clubs within it have a long history of producing excellent volunteers who provide invaluable support to the players and supporters of our community and professional clubs.
The awards are used to recognise and reward volunteers for all the hard work they put in. As a winner for the Wakefield Service Area award the winners will now be automatically entered in to the Regional competition. If selected as a national winner they will be invited to the cup final at Wembley to receive a national award.
Young volunteer of the year – Luke Saunders (Stanley Rangers)
Luke came forward at the start of last season when Stanley Rangers were looking for a coach to take on the Under 13s.
Luke recruited a number of his team mates to help him and now this team has more backroom staff than any other, all able to pass on their expertise!
As the Under 13s season comes to a close they now have a team of coaching staff, all of whom are fully committed to making sure the players get the very best, a much better picture than the start of the season.
Volunteer of the year – Dennis Nicholson (Featherstone Lions)
