The first game of a new campaign saw Stanley visit Stanningley and a very tough game was expected. Both teams did not disappoint. After an even first 10 minutes it was Stanningley that took the lead after poor defending out wide left a gap for the Stanningley centre to register the first try. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 4-0 in favour of the hosts. Powerful prop Ben Fisher then had a try disallowed when he looked to have crossed the line but poor pitch markings went against him and the referee went in favour of the hosts. Towards the end of the first half Stanningley increased their lead when a wicked bounce of the ball fell in favour of the hosts and their lead was extended to 8-0. This time the conversion was succesful and this proved to be the end of the scoring in the first half with Stanningley 10-0 ahead.
The second half was almost a mirror of the first half with Stanley the dominant side and using the slope to their advantage with some punishing runs from the Stanley pack. Stanley were rewarded with their first try of the game and of the season when Robert Hartley scored close to the posts. The kick was taken and converted by Jacob Unwin making the score 10-6 in favour of the hosts. This gave Stanley renewed confidence and Stanningley were under pressure for long spells in their own 20 metre zone. It was only a matter of time before Stanley scored again and this time it was prop Ben Fisher that powered over to equal the scores at 10-10. The kick, this time much more difficult, was taken and converted to make the score 10-12 in favour of Stanley. This was a lead they were to keep and record their first win of the season at the first attempt. Some outstanding defence from Stanley kept the hosts in their own half for long periods of time and the Stanley line never looked in danger of being breached. An excellent all round performance saw Stanley take the spoils.
