Stanley lost out by 2 conversions leaving a final scoreline of 14 to 18 against top Hull outfit Skirlaugh Bulls. Stanley today started as underdogs, but matched their opponents, with the best defensive display I have ever seen by this team.
Skirlaugh opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark after spending 90% of the first half in our end of the field due to some silly errors and panicked play. Stanley with new half back Corey Eaton at the helm looked great in attack in parts, but knock ons, and running into touch did not help. The side however held Skirlaugh out at the break, and went in 6 points to nil.
The second half started with Skirlaugh kicking on the last and getting a very good bounce leaving the hull attacker a clear run to the line to score a good four pointer.Stanley hit back after Thomas Sowerby ran onto a perfect ball from Matty Hobson to sprint 60 yards to score beating several defenders to the line. The next scorer was again Thomas Sowerby who danced his way over the line after beating 4 or 5 defenders to score. Harry Hirst again was magnificent in both defence and attack, was rewarded with a great try too.Harry converted his try from the touch line and had a superb performance. The team looked like they are heading in the right direction, and with new players like Aiden, Ollie, Corey, Tom, Connor, Lee, and Ellis we could have a very good season.
The Skirlaugh Bulls coaching team selected Thomas Sowerby for the Stanley MOTM, and we selected their number 7 who was superb too!
