Heworth U12s 8 Stanley Rangers U12s 22
02.03.19
The Under 12’s first competitive league match finished in a great result after a hard fought game, 22-8.
Going up against a big physical Heworth side Stanley knew they had to match the opposition to get anything out of this game and they did just that. The game started fairly scrappy with both teams making early errors but once Stanley started controlling the ball they soon started taking charge of the game.
However the first opportunity to score fell to Heworth after their number 11 evaded 3 or 4 Rangers' tacklers to break free and get over the line only to somehow drop the ball with nobody within touching distance. This seemed to cause Stanley to go up a gear with some strong carries from the forwards starting to cause problems for Heworth and it finally paid dividends when 1 carry led to an offload from Jayden Walker to Lewis Spivey who broke clear and looked like scoring until he was hauled down just short. From the resulting play Zack Leaworthy burrowed his way over for the opening score, the conversion was missed 0-4.
The rest of the half was back and forth with Stanley’s strong defence holding Heworth at bay.
In the second half the game seemed to open up for Stanley. After weathering the first few Heworth sets they started to make serious gains into the Heworth territory and after a line break, Stanley worked the ball to the left and after debutant Noah Holding was pulled down short Lewis Spivey forced his way over. Again the conversion was missed. 0-8. There then came a period of play where Stanley registered 2 more quick fire tries either side of a Heworth score. First prop Riley Britton took a delightful little short ball from twin George to run 50m, rounding the full back for a try any back would have been proud of. Missed conversion 0-12. Heworth didn’t give in and registered their first try after getting into Stanley’s 20 they worked the ball wide to score in the corner. Missed conversion 4-12.
Next came another long range try by Joe Winder who after evading a couple of defenders used his pace to round the rest of the Heworth players and run down the wing. He brought the ball round to a kickable position and Josh chapman converted 4-18. Stanley were really on a high now and were causing Heworth all sorts of trouble both in defence and attack and after a good kick chase Kye Robinson came up with a strong tackle dislodging the ball in the process. Quick reactions saw George Britton pick up the ball and beat the despairing tacklers to score in the corner. Missed conversion 0-22.
From the kick off Stanley coughed up possession and final few minutes were played out in Stanley territory with Heworth getting over for a second score which proved to be a consolation try as the referee blew up after the missed conversion final score 8-22.
Riley Britton took the awards for Parents, pPayers and Coaches Player of the Match after an awesome display. Kye Robinson picked up the Magic Moment and Zack Leaworthy took the Oppositions award.
