Newsome Panthers U12s 22 v Stanley Rangers U12s 10
U12s Challenge Cup Round 1
09.03.19

More cup disappointment for Stanley... Stanley travelled away to Newsome in the 1st round of the Yorkshire cup and a slow start ended up proving costly.

Playing uphill Stanley received the kick off and immediately made a mistake, gifting possession to Newsome in Stanley’s 20 from which they took full advantage. After working the ball to their left and getting close to the line their big loose forward crashed his way over. The try was converted 6-0. Newsome scored again 5 minutes later after they worked their way down field before moving the ball, this time to their right and more uncharacteristic soft Stanley defence allowed their winger to take the ball all the way to the line and score, breaking through 2 or 3 attempted tackles. Try converted 12-0. This seemed to jolt Stanley into life and they started to play to their capabilities with the forwards starting to make inroads into the the Newsome defence and defensively coming up with some strong tackles. They got their reward when Riley Britton ran onto a well-timed short little pass from Zack Leaworthy to break clear and run to the line to score. George Britton converted excellently to bring the score to 12-6. The rest of the half was back and forth and saw some excellent goal line defence from both teams to go to the break with the scores the same: 12-6.

The second half saw Stanley start with a very positive attitude and they forced an early error from Newsome. We were unlucky not to register an early score after a smart cross field kick early in the tackle count looked like it would lead to a try but Stanley were unable to capitalise and ended up wasting the chance. Stanley’s defence was really coming to the fore with aggressive line speed and crunching tackles and Newsome were struggling to make yards. This eventually lead to Stanley registering their 2nd try after Finlay Tate crashed onto a pass to force his way over. George Britton was unable to convert 12-10. At this point Stanley looked like they would kick on and take control of the game but, Newsome didn’t collapse and got a break when the opposition winger came in to make a tackle and out of nowhere stripped the ball 1 on 1 to break away and run unopposed to score under the posts against the run of play. Conversion successful 18-10. Stanley tried right to the end but couldn’t find a way to get themselves back into the game and they gave away a penalty in the dying seconds close to their own line and to kill time and finish the game Newsome took the chance to kick a penalty goal. Final score 22-10.
