Stanley Rangers U12s 22 v Shaw Cross Sharks U12s 4
09.03.19

Stanley put in another strong display to maintain their winning start to the season.

In horrible weather conditions Shaw Cross kicked off with the wind at their backs and Stanley were given an early advantage as the ball sailed out on the full. From the resulting penalty, Stanley’s first set both in attack and defence really set the tone for the game as the forwards made inroads into the opposition’s defence and finished the set close to the Shaw Cross line before aggressive defence then restricted Shaw Cross to limited metres. Stanley’s first try came off the back of more strong defence which forced an error and from the resulting set Stanley received a penalty. Quick thinking from hooker Ewan Molyneux created an overlap and he found a pass to Josh Chapman to go over in the corner. George Britton just missed what was a very difficult conversion from out wide into the wind 4-0. Stanley then went through a period where they dominated the opposition making good yards in attack and forcing errors in defence. Stanley’s second score came from a bit of opportunistic play after they had worked the ball down their left edge and were tackled close to the sideline. Lewis Spivey jumped into dummy half to take a scoot for field position however he burst through multiple tacklers and then beat the fullback to score under the posts. Zack Leaworthy kicked the conversion 10-0. The rest of the half Stanley went away from what they had been doing well, turning the ball over on numerous occasions which gave Shaw Cross a chance to get into better areas but they were unable to take advantage and break Stanley’s defence, The half time whistle blew with the score still 10-0.

The second half started in the best possible way for Stanley as they forced an early error from Shaw Cross, 2 strong drives and a quick play the ball gave Ewan Molyneux a chance to send the markers one way before scooting the opposite way and beating a couple of defenders to slide over. Josh Chapman converted 16-0. Stanley were in total control of the game but kept gifting the ball to Shaw Cross by trying to play a little too expansive rugby for the conditions, although this nearly paid off when Riley Britton made a half break and offloaded to Joe Winder who looked to be away and clear only for a last a despairing shove to send him slightly off balance and he stepped onto the touch line. Stanley did manage to register their forth try though again after aggressive defence forced an error from the visitors, they worked up to Shaw Cross‘s line and Riley Britton ran onto a short ball to barge his way over. Zack Leaworthy converted 22-0.

The final few minutes saw Shaw Cross have their best spell of the match and they were able to put some sustained pressure on the Stanley line and although they couldn’t break the Stanley defence a smart cross field grubber gave them a consolation try. Conversion missed final score 22-4.
