Stanley Rangers U12s 12 v West Bowling U12s 10
23.06.19
Stanley returned to winning ways in the league with a
hard fought win against a well drilled West Bowling team. JUST!!!
Stanley started the game playing downhill in hot
conditions and right from the start they looked up for the game. Taking
advantage of the hill they used a combination of strong carries by the
forwards followed by quick scoots from the backs to make good metres
downfield. Stanley were also making it hard work for the opposition to get any
sort of field position using smart kicks to pin Bowling close to their own
line then strong defence restricting their metres. After going close a number
of times the pressure finally paid off when George Britton found an offload to
Ewan Molyneux who got across to the left edge to throw a cut out pass to James
Astin to go in out wide. Zack Leaworthy landed an excellent conversion. 6 - 0.
Stanley continued to dominate going downhill and were
rarely tested in their own half but it took them until late in the half to
register their second score. Just as it looked like West Bowling would
frustrate Stanley with their stubborn defence captain Riley Britton took a hit
up close to the West Bowling line and he found an extra bit of strength to
break free of a tiring defence to get over the line at the side of the posts.
Josh Chapman converted. 12 - 0. H.T.
The second half started in much the same way as the first
half ended with Stanley controlling the opposition in defence but as the half
wore on the advantage of the slope started to swing the game in West Bowling’s
favour. On a couple of occasions West Bowling managed to slice through
Stanley’s defence and Stanley were thankful to full back James Astin’s
excellent last line of defence as he came across to make vital cover tackles
and Stanley managed to scramble back in defence to keep the opposition out.
West Bowling finally managed to register their first score after a good kick
downfield caused an error and give them a scrum in Stanley’s half, from the
resulting plays their loose forward took a short ball to go through and score.
Try converted. 12 - 6.
Stanley’s heads didn’t drop and if anything they seemed
to raise their efforts. In a tense final quarter the game went through a spell
of both teams completing their sets then kicking the ball into the oppositions
half, each team looking to force a crucial error. Just as Stanley seemed to
have control of the game going into the final couple of minutes they came up
with an unforced error giving West Bowling 1 final chance and after working
their way into Stanley’s 20 their big prop broke through the line to score to
the left of the posts. The ref said the kick would be the final act of the
game but Stanley were to be handed a huge slice of luck as the West Bowling
kicker pulled his conversion. On the balance of the game Stanley probably
deserved this piece of good fortune and the final whistle blew. F.T. 12 - 10.
After an excellent team performance Stanley’s
awards went to: James Astin - oppositions, parents and players. The team took
the coaches award.
