Open Age victory
Stanley Rangers retained their top position in the CMS Yorkshire Premier Division with a hard fought away win against Brotherton on 13th Sept. A resolute home defence from Brotherton provided a challenge for Stanley, but tries from Gareth Dobson, Scott Holt and Mark Robinson, with conversions from Danny Duce were enough to secure a victory. A top of the table clash away against Sharlston Rovers tomorrow, Saturday 20th, should be a riveting encounter and all support is welcomed (K.O. 2.30pm).

Under 17s
The newly formed Under 17s begin their season with a home fixture against Redhill on Sunday 21st September.

Wakefield District Sports Awards 2003
Stanley Rangers Under 18s team are up for two awards in the Wakefield District Sports Awards 2003. The team are competing in the category of Junior Team Performance of the Year and coach Gerald King is up for the Manager/Coach of the Year award. The presentation evening is on Tuesday 23rd September at Painthorpe Country Club and everyone at the Club wishes them the very best of luck.

Xmas Dinner
A Couples Xmas Dinner with entertainment from a female vocalist will be held at the Clubhouse on the 5th December. See the [ Events ] page for more details.

The Open Age team began their season with a victory against Queens (30.08.03). In a full-bloodied game, Stanley led at half time with tries from Duce, Godfrey and Lynch. Cooper's early try in the second half put Stanley in front but Queens hit back to come within two points. However, Queens had a man sent off after an elbowing incident on Gordon Lynch, who left the pitch injured. Dobson and Baxby added further tries for Stanley, although two late tries by Queens brought the scoreline closer. Man of the Match for Stanley was Stuart Godfrey, followed by Gareth Dobson and Chris Woolford.

Youth Squad players wanted
Stanley Rangers are looking for players for both the Under 17s and 18s squads for the forthcoming season. The Under 17s are coached by Hull FC player Warren Jowitt, a former Stanley Rangers player. For details please contact Barbara Rawlinson (01924 255370).
The Under 18s who won 5 trophies in their age group last season will again be coached by Gerald King who can be contacted on 01924 826140.

Rangers v Wildcats -Cricket!
On Sunday 31st August, a Stanley Rangers Select team will be entertaining a Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 11 at Stanley Falcons Cricket Ground (which is next to the Stanley Sports and Social Club, where Stanley Rangers play, off Lee Moor Road - Directions). The game is due to begin at 2.30pm and all are welcome.

First round win
Stanley Rangers are successfully through the first round of the Wakefield & District League's Brian McDermott Memorial City Plasterers Cup with a 18-0 win against Crofton Cougars.

Sportsmen's Dinner

Stanley Rangers will be hosting a Sportsmen's Dinner at Hatfield Hall, Stanley with guest speakers, including Gary Schofield (ex. GB, Leeds and Hull). Tickets are £25 and available from John Holroyd (01924 826517).

New Season Cup Draws
In the draw for the Yorkshire Cup 2003, Round 1, Stanley Rangers are exempt from the first round which is to be played on Saturday 13th September.

Saturday 23rd September sees the Open Age team in action for the first round of the Wakefield & District League's Brian McDermott Memorial City Plasterers Cup. The home fixture against Crofton Cougars will kick off at 2.30pm.

Disappointment for Stanley
Stanley Rangers bid to enter the Arriva Trains Conference League Division Two was turned down this week after the ATC Management Committee approved East Hull and Ince Rose Bridge. Instead Stanley have been put “on standby” in case any existing clubs drop out before the beginning of next season. Dean Sampson in the "League Weekly" said that everyone at the club was “gutted” but that the club would have to take a leaf out of East Hull's book, who were turned down twice before their acceptance. The club will be reapplying and hope for success next time.

Mixed results for BARLA Young Lions
The BARLA Great Britain Young Lions beat Langedoc Roussillon 38 - 18 on the 4th June 2003 in the first game of their week long tour of France, playing in conditions of 28° heat. Craig Cawthray added a late try in the second half. However, the Lions were beaten by the France Juniors team 6-29 on Sat. 7th June in Toulouse. The combination of a strong French side and temperatures of above 30° proved too much for the Young Lions.

Under 18s international trio
Craig Cawthray, Jackie Hogan and Kevin King have all been selected to represent Great Britain. Craig is to play against the French Under 18s and then all three will be in the New Zealand squad. Fund raising events towards the cost of these trips begin on Saturday 31st May when a [ karaoke evening ] at the Clubhouse will be held.

Dean Sampson marked his sensational Super League comeback with a crucial try as Castleford boosted their play-off hopes with an impressive win over top-six rivals Warrington, 32-16 (24th May). Sampson, appropriately wearing the number 36 jersey rather than his old number 10, crossed the Warrington line on 29 minutes, just after entering the action as a substitute. Dean retains his place in the squad for the home game against Huddersfield Giants at the Jungle (30th May).

Rodillians Annual 7's Tournament
Stanley Rangers have entered four teams in the Rodillians RUFC Annual Sevens Touch Rugby Tournament. After the first evening's games, teams 1 and 2 for Stanley Rangers lead the table, having won both their games. The tournament continues for the next 2 Tuesday evenings at the Rodillians ground at Manley Park, Lee Moor Road.

Presentation evenings
The [Under 18s presentation evening ] will be on Friday 9th May and the [ Under 16s ] is on Friday 16th May at 7.30pm. The Under 11s is on Saturday 10th;[ Open Age ] on Saturday May 17th, Under 12s on Friday 30th May and Under 13s 14th June. The Under 14s is to be arranged.

U18s Final victory
Stanley Rangers Under 18s made it 5 out of 5 when they won the U18s Premier Division Play Off Final against Drighlington 22-12 on Wed. 30th April. This crowns a tremendous season as they have won all 5 trophies in their age group - the BARLA National Cup, the BARLA Yorkshire Cup, Yorkshire League Cup, Wakefield Cup and now the top 4 Play off Trophy.

No Wildcats for Dean
Dean Sampson has been in talks with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, currently looking for a front row replacement for Clinton O'Brien. However, he has ruled out a return to Super League action at Belle Vue stating that he couldn't give the job 100% because of his other commitments (he is currently Player Performance Manager and Junior Academy coach at Castleford and playing at Stanley Rangers).

Wildcat signings
Scott Childs and Adam Robinson from the Under 16s have signed for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats from the scholarship scheme, whilst ex-Stanley players Danny Grice, Mark Applegarth and Craig Robinson have all signed for the Wildcats from their Academy teams.

Play Offs Final
Stanley Rangers Under 18s will be playing Drighlington in the Under 18s Premier Division Play Off Final at Featherstone at 7.45pm on Wednesday 30th April.

The Open Age team face an away fixture against top of the division East Hull on Saturday 3rd May.

Cup Final Victory
Stanley Rangers beat Ackworth Jaguars 38-10 in the Builders Supply Ltd Cup Final at the Lionheart Stadium, Featherstone. Leading 32-0 at half time, Stanley were restricted by Ackworth in the second half but finished 38-10 victors. Danny Duce scored a try and seven conversions and was named Man of the Match.

Builders Supply Ltd Cup Final
Stanley Rangers will face Ackworth Jaguars in the Builders Supply Ltd Cup Final at the Lionheart Stadium, Featherstone on Tuesday April 22nd. The kick off is at 7.30pm.

BARLA County Championships
Carl Hughes scored two tries as Yorkshire beat Cumbria 38-18 in a tough encounter at the Lionheart Stadium, Featherstone on Sunday 13th April. The win meant that Yorkshire took second place in this season's competition behind Lancashire, who became champions two weeks ago.

Under 18s National Winners
The Under 18s completed their excellent cup run this season with a 16-8 victory over West Hull in the BARLA National Youth Finals. Leading at half time 6-4, they increased their lead with a try from Williams, converted by King and although West Hull got a try back, the Stanley win was assured by a Jacky Hogan try.

District Youth Finals Cup Results
Mixed fortunes for our two teams representing Stanley in the Wakefield District ARL Junior Cup Finals on Sunday 6th April at Post Office Road, Featherstone. Stanley U14s had a resounding victory over Walton 46-4, with Gareth Firm named as Man of the Match. Stanley U12s put up a good fight but were beaten by Normanton Knights.

District Youth Finals
The Wakefield District ARL Junior Cup Finals will be played on Sunday 6th April at Post Office Road, Featherstone from 12 noon and we have two teams in the finals. Stanley U12s will take on Normanton Knights in the first game and Stanley U14s will play Walton. Good luck to both teams.

Cup Final Results
The Under 18s secured victory against Normanton Knights in the Wakefield District ARL Youth Cup Final on Sunday 30th March. Having taken three trophies, the Under 18s are aiming for a fourth against West Hull in the final of the National Cup on April 6th. In the Under 16s Final, Stanley were beaten by Yorkshire Premier Division champions Normanton Knights.

BARLA GB Lions squad call-up
Carl Hughes is one of three Wakefield-based players selected for the BARLA Great Britain Lions squad to play for the inaugural Victory Cup in Russia. The event will be held from May 5-9 at the Olympic Stadium, Moscow.

The Wakefield District ARL Youth Finals will now be played on Sunday 30th March at Crigglestone ARLFC. The Under 16s final against Normanton Knights will kick off at 1pm and the Under 18s Final against Normanton Knights will follow after at approximately 2.30pm.

Brothers in sport
Carl and Paul Hughes have both been picked to play for their country. Carl, who plays in the Open Age, played in the Great Britain U21s side tha beat the Army 62-6 in the Scottish Courage Championship game and has also been chosen to play for the Yorkshire Open Age side in the County Championships clash against Lancashire. Paul who plays in the U18s has been picked for the England Students U19s, who will be playing internationals against Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Stanley in the news
Stanley Rangers Under 18s have been making news in the rugby league newspapers this week. Both the Rugby Leaguer and League Express and the League Weekly had items on the semi-final win of the Under 18s in the BARLA National Cup on the 16th March when they beat Wigan St Patricks 20-19.. The League Weekly item quoted the Wigan St Patricks secretary as saying "..we cannot speak too highly about the attitude and behaviour of the Stanley club. We don't know much about them but today they typified what Rugby League should be all about". Well deserved praise for the team and the club! [Match Report and Photos]

Cup run ends

Stanley battled hard against Castleford Lock Lane in the quarter finals of the GMB Union BARLA National Cup on Saturday but came out the losers 4-24, with Dean Sampson as man of the match and Carl Hughes and Gordon Lynch second and third. Although bitterly disappointed, Stanley have made a huge impact on the cup run this year and created an enormous amount of interest.

National Cup quarter final

The Open Age team will be tackling Castleford Lock Lane in the quarter finals of the GMB Union BARLA National Cup on Saturday (K.O. 2.00pm), which sees Dean Sampson face his former Castleford Tigers team-mate Lee Crooks, now the coach of Lock Lane. If the scores are level at full time an extra 10 minutes will be played each way. If the scores are still tied after extra time, then the game will be settled by a golden score (first team to score goes through).

U18s French tour

The Under 18s will be leaving Stanley for a weeks tour of Carcassone and Toulouse from March 4 to the 11th. They will be playing two games against Carcassone Academy and a combined Toulouse and Carcassone Academy. On their return they play away at Wigan St Patricks in the semi-final of the National Cup on March 16th (Coach details can be obtained from the Clubhouse).

Marching On

Weekend action saw cup victories for Stanley teams ranging from the Open Age to the Under 12s. The Open Age team progressed to a fifth round draw away against Castleford Lock Lane by an impressive fourth round victory in the GMB Union BARLA National Cup over West Bowling, 24-6. The Under 16s reached the final of the Wakefield Cup with a decisive win over Crigglestone All Blacks 46-2. They have also reached the top of Divison One of the Under 16s League with games in hand. There were victories in their Challenge Cup matches for the Under 14s, Under 13s and the Under 12s.

Parking Arrangements

Stanley Rangers would like to ask all home and away spectators visiting the ground to park at either the Stanley Arms public house car park or at the Rodillians RU ground on match days. Club officials, players and other people involved in the teams (coaches, administrators, etc.) should park in the Stanley Rangers car park and not on Lee Moor Road, or the pathway leading up to the car park. This must be kept clear at all times for access by emergency services. Your co-operation in this matter is vital to the continuing success of the club. Thank you.

Cup Winners

Barla Yorkshire County Youth Cup final saw a terrific win for Stanley U18's, beating Shaw Cross 42-10 at the Boulevard on Sunday. Tries scored for Stanley were by Craig Cawthray , Stuart Kain, Jackie Hogan, Kev King , Chris Walker and Danny Grice with Kev King adding 6 conversions and being awarded the man of the match trophy after an excellent game. Cup Action

The Open Age first team added another scalp to its list of conquests by knocking out East Leeds 14-8 in Round 3 of the GMB Union National Cup. Their reward is a place in the last 16 with a draw against Pennine League first division side West Bowling. The Under 18 team take on Shaw Cross in the final of the Huddersfield Supporters Club Yorkshire County Youth Cup at the Boulevard, Hull on Sunday 16th Feb at 1.45pm.

BARLA Great Britain Young Lions/Emerging England XIII
Mark Applegarth, Craig Cawthray and Jackie Hogan have been selected for the squad which will supply players for both the Emerging England XIII and the BARLA Great Britain Young Lions games against France Juniors. The two game tour will be the Emerging England XIII v France Juniors, Thursday 27th February, Robin Park Arena, Wigan (K.O. 7:30pm) and BARLA Great Britain Young Lions v France Juniors, Sunday 2nd March, Lionheart Stadium, Featherstone Rovers RLFC (K.O. 2:00pm).

Cup roundup

Stanley Rangers teams were in cup action over the weekend. The Open Age first team stormed through Round 2 of the GMB Union National Cup, beating Ashton 52-0. They now face an away fixture against East Leeds on Saturday 8th February. The Under 16 team battled bravely but were finally beaten 22-4 by West Hull in the 3rd Round of the League Cup.

The Open Age first team produced a superb team performance to knock out Wigan St Jude's 32-18 in the first round of the GMB Union National Cup. Rangers have been drawn at home to either Ashton or Dodsworth in the second round.

All four of the Stanley Rangers players named in the BARLA Young Lions squad have been in action in the Test matches against the Australian Schoolboys, with Jackie Hogan captaining the Lions team in the third Test at Leeds and being named Young Lions Man of the Match. The Australian Schoolboys won all three matches. The Great Britain Under 18 Academy meet the Australian Schoolboys in the First Test at Knowsley Road on Sunday 8th December (KO 3.00pm).

The Under 16s progressed into the semi-finals of the BARLA Yorkshire Cup following a resounding 34-8 win over Whinmoor.

Stanley Rangers players Mark Applegarth, Craig Cawthrey, Jackie Hogan and Kevin King have been selected for the BARLA Great Britain squad that will tackle the touring Australian Schoolboys later this month. The First Test is on the 28th November at Halton Community Stadium, Widnes (KO 7.30pm); the Second Test is on the 1st December at Craven Park, Barrow Raiders RLFC (KO 1.30pm) and the Third Test is on the 4th December at South Leeds Stadium, Leeds (KO 7.30pm).

The Yorkshire Junior League's decision to remain independent of the governing body BARLA, initially over BARLA's insurance premiums issue, has forced the controlling body to withdraw its referees from all YJL games. BARLA has accepted the YJL's resignation from the association and is now urging all clubs with juniors from U8s to U15s to join the West Riding Youth League.
