Emma scoops top award !

In a fantastic achievement, Emma King, the Under 8s coach, has been awarded the National Youth Volunteer of the Year award by the RFL. Emma had already won the Volunteer of the Year for the Wakefield Service area and her name was then forwarded for the national awards. She will be presented with this award, along with the other four winners, by Richard Lewis, chairman of the RFL, at the Challenge Cup Final at Twickenham on the 26th August. Tournament victory for U10s

The Under 10s continued their excellent form this season by winning the Featherstone Lions Tournament, beating Castleford Panthers in the
final. It was a great day for Stanley Rangers, with every player giving 110% beating East Leeds, Featherstone Lions, Smawthorne Panthers and drawing with Castleford Panthers through the rounds. Stanley were presented with a big trophy which will be on display in the clubhouse shortly.

Stanley Rangers ARLFC are pleased to announce that their Sport England Clubmark has been continued, following the annual reassessment of the club. This is an accreditation scheme run by Sport England which sets the standard for all quality sports clubs in England. The Clubmark certificate was gained in June 2005 after the hard work and efforts of the Committee.

Stanley Rangers will be holding their annual Vic Sellers Day, in memory of club stalwart Vic, on the 30th July at the clubhouse, beginning at 12 noon. There will be a BBQ, Darts, Dominoes and cricket. Please come along and enjoy a fun day at the club.

Stanley Ranger's Club Secretary, Barbara Rawlinson, has been awarded Sports Person of the Year at the CMS Yorkshire League awards evening. BARLA Chairman Spen Allison made the presentations. Barbara has been involved in the club since her son Gareth,22, who plays in the Open Age team began in the Under 9s. She has been on the Club Committee for about 8 years and this is her 5th year as club secretary. She is also the secretary for the Open Age team. Barbara says that she gets a lot of help from everyone and that "we all work very much as a team". Congratulations go to Barbara from everyone at the club for this well-deserved honour.
Open Age pre-season training begins

The Open Age team began its pre-season training on the 11th July. Training will be on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6.45pm at the clubhouse. Old and new players are welcome.

The Under 10s will be having their Presentation Night on 15th July 2006 at LA Bowl in Leeds.
On the 25th June the Under 10s team took part in a tournament at Castleford Panthers. They won all their games, only conceding 1 try through the rounds and earning maximum points. Round 1 was a bye; Round 2 Cas Panthers 0-16 Stanley Rangers; Round 3 Lock Lane 4-20 Stanley Rangers; Round 4 Victoria Gladiators 0-16 Stanley Rangers; Round 5 Normanton Knights 0-12 Stanley Rangers. Semi-finals Stanley Rangers 8-4 Normanton Knights. They then lost out to Cas Panthers 12-0 in the finals. Although Stanley were only beaten in the final, they came out at the end of the day with a fantastic 72 for and 24 against. A special mention went to Liam Green, Jordan Howden and Jordan Smith from the organisers of the tournament. Well done to the whole team, they all played well and we are all very proud of them.

The new U8' and U9's will begin training down at Ferry Lane on Wednesday evenings 6pm till 7.30pm. They are still interested in getting new players for the U9's to play in the new season. U9's most be 9 between Sept 06 and August 07.

RFL Awards to club coaches

Emma King, Under 8s, and Danny Grice, Under 16s, have just been been awarded RFL Volunteer awards for the Wakefield Service Area. Emma won Youth Volunteer of the Year and Danny won the Building the Team award. Emma received her award from Mick Heptonstall before the St. Helen's match at Belle Vue last Sunday . Danny will be presented with his award at the Jungle, Castleford on July 16th. [ Photos ]Their names will now go forward for the national awards which will be announced later in July. Those awards will be presented at the Challenge Cup Final at Twickenham. Many congratulations from the club to Emma and Danny for all their hard work.

The Under 10s presentation night will be on Saturday 29th July at the clubhouse at 7.30pm. The team has had a fantastic season with an unbeaten run of
As from Wednesday 28th June, the Under 10s will be training once a week on a Wednesday to teach the team the new MOD rules which will come into play from September. The last training session will be the 26th July, followed by the summer break. Training restarts on Wednesday 23rd August when there will be two sessions a week. Registration for the team is in July/August and passport size photos will be required.
The friendly game against Blackbrook Royals ARLFC from Saint Helens will be on the 2nd September, kick off will probably be at 11am - more details to follow.

Four members of the Stanley Rangers Under 9s team have been playing with Sandal RUFC under 9s and have just been part of the winnning side at Twickenham this weekend. They have bee though 2 qualifying tournaments and finished top of the
group each time playing 10 games all together. This weekend, Sandal RUFC U9s played in the National Finals at Twickenham, before the Barbarians game. This just proves what strong ties exist between the two Wakefield clubs. [ Under 9s team page ].

The Under 15s completed a cup double when they beat East Leeds 16-12 in the Challenge Cup Final on 1st May, to sit alongside their Unison U15s Cup Final trophy. Congratulations go to the team, their coach Ian Sampson, helpers and parents for a wonderful end to such a successful season [ Report ].
With the Under 14s winning the Wakefield District ARL Unison U14 Final and the Under 16s reaching the Final of the Wakefield ARL Unison Youth Under 16s Final, three of our junior teams have had really successful seasons and bode well for the future of junior rugby at Stanley Rangers.

Two of Stanley Ranger's junior teams - the Under 15s and Under 14s - won their finals in the Unison Cup Finals at Belle Vue, Wakefield on Sunday 9th April. Despite horrendous weather conditions, more than 400 spectators turned up at Belle Vue to watch the Junior Cup Finals. The Under 14s were too strong for opponents Normanton Knights, winning 34-4 [ Report ]. To complete the club double, the Under 15s beat Westgate Redoubt 22-14 [ Report ]. Congratulations go to all the players, coaches and parents for all their hard work this season.

An epic struggle between Ackworth and Stanley Rangers in the final of the Brian McDermott Memorial City Plasterers Cup was decided by a Gareth Whitehead penalty in extra time, giving Stanley a 28-26 victory. Stanley were beaten 10-0 by second placed Moorends in a Premier Division clash at the weekend. In wind and rain, the visitors were leading 4-0 at half time but a second half try from Shaun Carver, converted by Rafferty, increased the lead to 10-0, which Stanley were unable to reply to. Stanley players named in Yorkshire train-on squad

Congratulations go to the four Stanley players named in the Yorkshire train-on squad for the forthcoming BARLA County Championship. Simon Carr, Stuart Godfrey, Mark Robinson and Gareth Whitehead are part of the Tykes squad preparing for the match to face the winner of the championship's opening game between Lancashire and Cumbria on Sunday April 2nd. The final match of the series had been set for Sunday May 16th but this date is likely to be changed.

Brave defeat in final

Stanley Rangers U16s were beaten 26-6 by Normanton Knights in the Wakefield ARL Unison Youth Under 16s Final at Belle Vue on the 12th March. In a snow-hit Belle Vue, the unstinting help from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats staff and volunteers managed to provide playable conditions. After a 14-6 lead by Normanton at the half time break, two early tries from the Knights gave them a second half lead that Stanley could not break but Stanley held their defence firm to prevent any further score. Stanley's full back Billy Maxwell was named Man of the Match. Congratulations go to the team for reaching the final and facing opponents who are two divisions higher in the league. [ Report ]
England call-up for Matthew

Under 15s player Matthew Wildie has been selected for the England Youth Under 15s squad. Matthew, who is a member of the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats scholarship programme, has gone through a gruelling12 month selection process to earn his place in the national squad. The process started last April with the Wakefield Service Area games and then went on to the selection for regional 5 day camps, followed on by selection for the Yorkshire squad. Finally he gained selection for the national preparation squad, which was then whittled down to an 18 man squad.
The Under 15s squad will begin preparing for their annual match against the Welsh Under-16 team at Brewery Field, Bridgend on Friday 14th April 2006 (ko 1pm) while the English Schools Under 16s squad will prepare for the tour of France, also in April.
The game against Wales will be England Under 15s’ fourth fixture of this type between the two countries and England won have all the previous encounters. [ Link to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ]

Under 16s Cup Final

The Wakefield & District ARL Under 16s Cup final between Normanton Knights and Stanley Rangers will go ahead on Sunday as originally scheduled.
The final had been put in danger through Normanton’s involvement in the Bartletts Insurance National Cup and the bad weather last weekend, which ruled out play in the Knights’ tie at Pilkingtons. Cup organisers initially insisted that the National Cup game should take precedence but it now appears that the delayed tie will now take place on March 18.
Stanley and Normanton will meet at Belle Vue, Wakefield, this Sunday at 1.00pm.

Stanley Rangers are buoyant after two consecutive cup wins. Last weekend saw Stanley beat former Yorkshire Premier rivals Sharlston Rovers 35-24 in round two of the City Plasterers Cup, whilst the previous weekend Townville were beaten 30-12 in the Fred Marshall Senior Cup.

Good wins for the Under 15s, Under 14s and Under 12s in recent cup games. The Under 15s beat Upton 64-0 in the semi-final of the Wakefield Under 15s Cup, the Under 14s beat Castleford Lock Lane 42-0 in the U14s Challenge Cup and the Under 12s overcame Walton 44-0 in the Wakefield Under 12s Cup.

Under 8s teams took part in a series of short games and then did a lap of honour at half time in front of a crowd of 9,157. First round Challenge Cup draw

Stanley Rangers will be heading up to Cumbria, having drawn Barrow Island away in the first round of the Powergen Challenge Cup. The draw was made on Friday January 20th at the Royal Armouries in Leeds by rugby league legends Alex Murphy and Ellery Hanley, when representatives of the club attended. The fixtures are to be played on Saturday February 4th. Barrow Island are currently top of the Premier Division in the North West Counties League, having won 8 out of 10 games.
Elsewhere in the area, Eastmoor have drawn Thornhill away, Normanton are away to Skirlaugh and Oulton Raiders are away at Crosfields.
Wakefield Cup draws

The draws have now been made for the various Wakefield Cups. In the Brian McDermott Memorial City Plasterers Cup, Stanley are away to Upton in Round One. In the Builders Supply Ltd Cup Semi Finals the draws are: Stanley A v Eastmoor A; Wakefield City v Crofton Cougars. Matches to be played Saturday January 28 2006.
Under 9s - new coach wanted

Owing to the demand of youngsters keen to play, the Under 9s are planning to run an extra team. Steve Parker, the current Under 9s coach, will oversee both teams and is looking for a coach for the additional team. To join the Under 9s you will need to be 9 between September 2005 and August 2006 and for the Under 8s you need to be 8 between September 2005 and August 2006. The Under 8s will begin training at Outwood Grange College sports hall from February 1st between 6-7pm.

Great win for Stanley

Stanley moved through to the next round of the Powergen Challenge Cup with a fine win over Heworth. At half time the home side had a narrow 12-8 lead but Stanley took the lead with second half tries from Cattley, Riley and Robinson, although Heworth fought back Stanley took the points [ Report ]. Castleford Panthers and Normanton Knights also made it through to the first round.
The draw for the first round will take place at lunchtime on Friday January 20th.

After the Christmas and New Year break, Stanley Rangers are back in action away at Heworth in the preliminary round of the Powergen Challenge Cup. Kick off is at 2pm. There are 18 first round ties and the 36 amateur sides
The 2006 Powergen Challenge Cup kick-starts on Saturday with 18 first round ties. Local ties of interest are Normanton Knights at home to Embassy, Upton at home to Blackbrook the Lancashire Cup winners, Queens are away to Crosfields, Sharlston Rovers away to Saddleworth and Drighlington versus Kells.
National Conference League Premier and First Division clubs, plus five LHF Healthplan National League sides, enter in the first round on 4-5 February, together with the Army, Royal Navy and RAF. The semi-professional sides from LHF National One and Two come in round three, with the twelve Super League clubs entering round four - the last 32 stage.

Extra time heartache in Cup

Broughton Red Rose needed extra time to see off Stanley Rangers 16-11, after the scores had been locked at 10-10 at the end of 80 minutes. Broughton's Paul Taylor grabbed the all-important extra time try, goaled by Dave Thurnton, after Gaz Whitehead had edged Stanley ahead with a field goal. Richard Cattley and Whiteham crossed for Stanley.
Powergen Challenge Cup Preliminary Round

The draw for the Powergen Challenge Cup was made on the 26th November at the Rugby League Congress which was held at the South Leeds Stadium. The draw was made by Pat Crawshaw (BARLA Board of Management member) and Jane Hyland who won the RFL National Volunteer Award.
Stanley have been drawn against Heworth in an away fixture. The matches for the Preliminary round are to be played on the weekend of the 7-8 January 2006.

Australian Exchange 2005

Following last year's successful student exchange between Outwood Grange College and Rockhampton High School in Queensland, Australia, Brad McClelland and Greg Mooney have just played their first game for the Under 16s. Stanley have been drawn away to Broughton Red Rose in the second round of the GMB National Cup to be played on the 10th December. Broughton are in Division One of the Cumberland League and are currently lying seventh in the table.
Wintry break

The weekend's fixtures were interrrupted by the cold spell which meant that the Open Age cup games and the Under 18s match were postponed. In the Fred Marshall Senior Cup the only match played was the first round tie between Queens v Upton which Queens won decisively 30-0. In the Alliance Cup first round, Milford were beaten 7-10 by Oulton.
This weekend sees the Open Age travel to Hunslet Old Boys , whilst the A team are at home to Sharlston. In the Youth teams, the Under 18s are away to Hunslet Warriors in round 2 of the League Cup and the Under 16s are at home to Kippax in the League Cup round 2.
Stanley break Upton's winning run

A 19-12 win saw Stanley break Upton's winning run. Tries from Cooper, Robbins and Grice with successful goaling by Grice broke the 12-12 deadlock at the break [ Report ].

Disappointment in quarter final

The Yorkshire Cup quarter final game between Stanley and Cutsyke saw Custsyke run out the winners 16-26 [ Report ]. In the other three quarter finals, Drighlington, Queensbury and Sharlston all won their games and the semi finals will be played on the 19th November.

Losses for both the Open Age teams at the weekend moved the two teams down their divisions. The first team lost at Queens 12-26 whilst the A team were beaten by Prince of Wales 18-40.

Saturday 29th sees Stanley Open Age travel to Queens who are currently second in the league having won all three of their league games this season. The A team, now second in Division Three, travel to Prince of Wales.
Ex Stanley youth player international call-up

Simon Greenwood-Haigh, ex Under 16s player and now at Loughborough University, was named in the England Lionhearts squad that played Malta Knights. This was the first ever game of rugby league played in Malta and the final score after a hard-hitting game, of 36-6 to Malta reflects the seriousness the country is taking in its sport. Simon was one of the substitutes that were all used. The Lionhearts team was drawn from NL3, RLC, the Forces and the Student game.
Yorkshire Cup Win

Stanley Rangers came away with an excellent 21-12 win away to Elland in the Fourth Round of the Tetley's Yorkshire Cup. This gives them an away game against Cutsyke in the quarter finals to be played on the 5th November. Cutsyke narrowly won against Keighley Albion 13-12 in their fourth round game. [ Report ]
Events at the Clubhouse

Junior members of Stanley Rangers can enjoy a Hallowe'en Party on the 30th October at the Clubhouse between 2 - 5pm. There will be fun and games and a prize for the best fancy dress.

Mountain Bike Raffle winner

A big thank-you to everyone who took part in the Raffle for the mountain bike. The draw was made at the Clubhouse at the interval in the Grand Final and the winner was Vince Crammerl of Outwood. A magnificent £250 was raised for the Open Age funds.
Yorkshire Cup win

A convincing 42-14 win over Hull Dockers earned Stanley Rangers a fourth round draw against Elland in the Yorkshire Cup. Elland, who beat Brighouse in the third round, are currently fifth in the Premier Division of the Pennine League.

Chequerfield Rangers have been expelled from the CMS Yorkshire League and their results in the Premier Division have been expunged, after a series of abandoned games. This now leaves ten teams in the Division [ League News ].

Stanley's loss 28-36 against Townville Tigers at the weekend meant that Townville leap frog over Stanley to take the top spot in the Premier Division. This weekend's Yorkshire Cup match against Hull Dockers promises to be a challenging one so come along and show your support!
Ex-Stanley players gain awards

Ex-Stanley players were in the news this week gaining awards at the Wildcats Player Award Dinner 2005 at the Painthorpe Country Club on Tuesday 20th September. In the Senior Academy, Craig Robinson scooped the Players player award with Adam Robinson sharing the Coach’s player award (with Mark Tinsdale). Scott Childs won the most improved player in the Junior Academy [ Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ].
Fundraising

Two new fundraising schemes are being launched by the Club. There will be a raflle with the fantastic prize of a mountain bike. The tickets are only 50p each and can be bought from any of the Open Age players or from the bar at the Clubhouse. The draw will be made at the Clubhouse at the half time of the Grand Final, on the 15th October.
The 100 Club will be starting soon. It will be £1 per week, with 50% of the takings being paid to the winner which will be drawn every Saturday night. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Stuart Godfrey or Stan Matthews. [ Events ]
Cup dates

The Open Age face Hull Dockers in a home fixture on Saturday 8th October in the 3rd round of the Yorkshire Cup. The Dockers had a close win against Stanningley Crown 48-46 in Round 2, so this should be an exciting tie.
More dates for your diary, are the 5th November for the Wakefield and District Plasterers Cup when Stanley travel to Upton and the 17th December for an away game against Westgate in the Wakefield and District Unison President's Cup.
Wins for Open Age teams

Both the Open Age teams had wins this weekend moving them both to second place in their Divisions. The League Weekly section on the Yorkshire league in the amateur news section leads with the headline "Stanley look good for top", recognising the club's aim to head the Yorkshire Premier Division this season.

Junior Teams begin season

Stanley's junior teams begin their seasons this weekend. The Under 16s are at home to Drighlington on Sunday 18th, k.o. 10.30am; the Under 15s take on Victoria Rangers at home on the 18th, k.o. 11.30; the Under 14s are away to Hunslet Warriors on the 18th; the Under 12s begin next week with an away game at Victoria Gladiators and the Under 10s are away this Saturday 17th at Normanton. The Under 9s had a successful game on Thursday 15th against Hunslet Warriors and the Under 8s will be playing next weekend on the 24th at home against Drighlington. The Under 18s fixture against Hunslet Warriors on Sunday 18th September has been cancelled.
The Open Age A team will be playing at home against East Leeds A on Saturday 17th, kick off 2.30pm.
