Stanley Rangers reaction to Conference rejection
08.06.05
The rejection of Stanley Rangers application to join the National Conference League has left the club disappointed and frustrated. The club's third application to join the National Conference was turned down with the reason that there were too many clubs in the locale already in the National Conference League (NCL). Club secretary Barbara Rawlinson said in an interview with The Wakefield Express: “We are totally shocked by the decision. It just doesn’t make sense. Rugby League has always been a sport with very specific pockets of support in this part of the country. This area and many others in Lancashire and Hull make up the majority of clubs in both amateur and professional rugby league. It’s all-the-more frustrating as this decision seems to suggest that no club in the area or within a given distance of other clubs in the Conference has any chance of entering the league. Had we been aware of this three years ago we could have explored different avenues. Instead we focused all our efforts on the National Conference because of the standard of play and every indication was that if we met all other criteria we would be supported in our application.”

The club has also achieved the prestigious ‘Clubmark’, a quality standard which very few clubs in the Conference can equal.

Open age coach Lee Sampson was equally bemused by the decision: “Not only is the ground and other facilities at this club excellent, we actually believe them to out-class many in the NCL."

A spokesman for the NCL said: "There were two applications. One from Stanley, the other from Egremont Rangers. One club was going to be disappointed and on this occasion it was Stanley because Egremont was the stronger of the two candidates."
